Very few of the Himalayan adventures have captured the beauty of natural contrasts as wonderfully as the Hampta Pass Trek. The trek covers an area where you would go from the dense forest and grasslands of Kullu to the barren high-altitude areas of Lahaul within 4-5 days only. I had heard of this trek being called the “trek between two worlds” before, but seeing it for myself was a completely unique experience. As all the arrangements were taken care of by TrekPanda, I could think about nothing else other than the pleasure of walking around this wonderful Himalayan pass.

Introduction to Hampta Pass: Where Your Himalayan Adventure Begins
The Hampta Pass trek from Manali is one of the most rewarding high-altitude treks in Himachal Pradesh. This trek lies about 14,100 feet high and is generally considered a moderate trek, which can easily be done within 4-5 days.
Apart from the destination, it’s the changes in the landscape that make this trek a unique adventure. From thick forest to glaciers and the stark mountain terrain of Lahaul, this is a trip that has it all.
June to September is considered the best time for the Hampta Pass trekking tour since the peaks remain snow-covered while the valleys are blooming with beautiful flowers.
Starting the Journey from Manali, the Gateway to Hampta Pass
For any Hampta Pass trekking adventure, Manali is the starting point. You should plan to be there a day before so that you can get settled and rest for the long journey ahead.
I got a good briefing from the TrekPanda team about the weather, route, safety, and Hampta Pass pack list, which helped me a lot.
Manali to Jobra: The Drive That Sets the Trek in Motion
The drive from Manali to Jobra is not long; it is just 16 km, but it will wonderfully introduce all the landscapes of this trek. The mountain route goes through apple plantations, villages, and deodar forests.
Upon reaching Jobra, I felt the change in climate right away when stepping outside the town. After a quick check of my backpack and stretching, the trek officially started.
Manali to Jobra: The Drive That Sets the Trek in Motion
Even though the trek officially starts from Jobra, the journey from Manali is a venture that cannot be neglected. With only the distance of 16 km covered, you will be taken away from the busy city to the beautiful Himalayas in around 1.5 hours.
The journey goes past apple orchards, Himachali villages, deodar forest, and mountain rivers along the way. Each bend in the road offers another picturesque view, giving an idea of what we can expect from the days to come.
Upon arrival in Jobra, we made checks of our bags, picked up our trekking poles, and we could see that our enthusiasm grew stronger with every passing minute. Our trekking starts where we stand, surrounded by the magnificent trees and clean mountain air.
Trekking Through Pine and Oak Forests Towards Chika
Jobra to Chika trek is one of the easiest and most comfortable parts of the whole Hampta Pass trek route. It is usually the first trekking day and involves the least distant walking, making it ideal for warming up before the upcoming difficult days.
The trekking route begins with an easy ascent through the dense forests of:
- Pine
- Oak
- Maple
- Deodar
As said earlier, the path is easy; therefore, you will have enough time to appreciate the beauty of nature.
This trail features
- Easy to moderate walking trail
- Dense forests along the entire route
- Small stream crossings and wooden bridges
Chika Campsite: The First Night Beneath Himalayan Skies
Chika campsite can be counted among the most scenic spots during the Hampta Pass hike. This is normally the first camp spot where trekkers spend the night near the Rani Nallah stream in an open terrain.
Some of the activities performed at Chika campsite normally include:
- Pitching tents
- Preparation of hot tea or soup
- Meal time at the campsite
- Sleeping and acclimatizing
- Early to bed to get ready for the next day’s climb
TrekPanda provided clean, organized camp facilities and proper meal arrangements during our visit. Such support becomes crucial for the first night experience as it paves the way for the rest of the trek experience.

Meadows, Wildflowers, and the River Crossing Towards Balu Ka Ghera
The meadows were wide and Alpine, wildflowers were in abundance, and several icy stream crossings, which brought some thrill into the walk.
The famous river crossing in Hampta Pass seems quite scary at first. But under the right guidance of our trek guides, it becomes a most pleasant experience. Trekking poles and waterproof shoes came in particularly handy here.
Balu Ka Ghera: Camping on the Sandy Plains of the Kullu Valley
‘Balu ka ghera’ translates to ‘bed of sand’. The campsite is unique as it is located among the tall mountain ranges and the valleys of glacial lakes. It differs from the other campsites in terms of being more remote and harsh.
However, once night falls, the temperature plummets. It was great to see that the TrekPanda team had arranged hot beverages for all of us upon our reaching the camp after our day’s trek. That little gesture raised the spirits of all of us before the tough summit day.
The Climb Begins: Balu Ka Ghera Towards Hampta Pass
The start of the climb comes early in the morning. It is the hardest part of the trek as altitude begins to take precedence over distance.
Hampta Pass trek difficulty is considered moderate. But its summit portion includes climbing through the snow patches and rocky terrains where the air is thin.
So, it was suggested that everyone should walk slowly and steadily. I found out that hydration and breaks make all the difference.
Reaching Hampta Pass: Standing at 14,000 Feet
Reaching the peak of Hampta Pass would probably be the most memorable moment of my life. You can view the green Kullu Valley behind you while the other side shows the desolate lands of Lahaul. It actually feels like walking into another world.
Prayer flags were flying against the strong mountain breeze as everyone celebrated and took pictures in the amazing scenery that surrounds you in this place.
